More than seven decades after the innovations of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, featuring guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt, combos called Hot Clubs carry on the gypsy jazz sound around the globe—in Tokyo, San Francisco, Seattle, Sweden, Norway, Austria, and many other locales. None, however, offers a fresher take on the tradition than does the Hot Club of Detroit, led by fast-fingered Reinhardt disciple Evan Perri.
Unlike the instrumentation of the original Paris-based quintet, comprising Reinhardt, violinist Stephane Grappelli, two rhythm guitarists, and a bassist, the current Hot Club of Detroit is made of two guitarists, an accordionist a saxophonist and bassist. Far from a traditional gypsy jazz ensemble, Hot Club of Detroit proves itself a versatile modern jazz group, with a unique acoustic-electric sound that surges past expectations and genre boundaries.
Joining The Hot Club of Detroit is French musician Cyrille Aimee, a native of Django Reinhardt's hometown and third-place winner of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition.
"Twenty-six-year-old Cyrille Aimee, with a voice like fine whiskey - oaky and smooth, with a hint of smokiness - sang in a kind of intimate communion with one raised hand, held before her face, in the stream of her singing, like a trumpet mute, as if to physically shape the sound." -The Washington Post
"Her singing is focused and playful, full of feeling, space and light." -The New York Times
"The Hot Club of Detroit plays with such reverence and passion. They play with a different level of conviction" -James Carter
